Wismar (Germany), Sunday 18 August 2013
Held in the town of Wismar, a medieval Hanseatic port on Germany's Baltic coast, the Schwedenlauf offers three scenic races — 2km, 5km, and 10km long.
Starting and finishing on the spacious Marktplatz in the Old Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), the route is a gently undulating loop through the town centre.
Participants in the 10k race run two laps of the 5k course.
The event forms part of the annual four-day Schwedenfest street festival which remembers the time when Wismar was under Swedish rule (from 1648 to 1803).
Over 650 runners took part in last year's Schwedenlauf.
The ‘Gewölbe’, a protected monument at Wismar's old harbour.
