Limone sul Garda - Malcesine (Italy), Sunday 14 October 2012
Almost 1000 runners completed last year's Lake Garda Marathon, and about 600 took part in the "non-competitive" 15km run. This year, there will also be a 30km race.
Entrants to the marathon and to the 30k must provide a medical certificate at registration if they are not registered with an official athletic club. They don't need a medical certificate to run the 15k.
All routes are immensely scenic point-to-point courses along the spectacular lakeside road around the northern end of Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake. The marathon route also includes a loop to the village of Arco north of Lake Garda.
The marathon and the 30k race begin in the resort of Limone sul Garda on the western shore. The route is gently undulating and overall a bit downhill. From the start to the finish, the course drops about 30 metres.
The finish line is in the small town of Malcesine (pictured) on the eastern shore. The 15k run starts en route in the windsurfing resort of Torbole, 15km north of Malcesine.
Ferry transport between the start and finish areas is included in the entry fees.
In 2011, the marathon winners were Pietro Colnaghi of Italy (2:31:11) and Marija Vrajić of Croatia (2:52:03).
