Around 400 runners take part annually in the Maratonina dei Borghi, a top class half marathon race, held in the town of Pordenone in the north-east of Italy.
Participants run one loop through several parts ("borghi") of Pordenone, a town of about 50,000 people, located on the vast plain to the north-east of Venice.
Start and finish are on Piazza XX Settembre in the town centre. The course, which is very mildly undulating, winds its way through residential, industrial and rural areas, as well as through Pordenone's picturesque town centre with its beautiful arcades.
In 2011, the winners were the Ethiopian elite distance runners Dereje Hailegiorgis (1:02:55) and Aynalem Woldemichael (1:13:27).
