89. Maratón mieru 2012
Held since 1924, the Peace Marathon in Košice, Slovakia's second-largest city, is Europe's oldest marathon race.
Around 800 runners took part in last year's 88th edition of the marathon, and over 1500 completed the half marathon.
The course is a 21km-loop, which is certified, traffic-free, and mostly flat and fast. Participants in the 42km marathon run two laps.
Starting and finishing on Košice's very pretty main square, the route runs through the historic town centre and through residential areas.
Košice is a pleasant and lively city of 240,000 people. The marathon has a high standing among the residents, and many of them give the runners their support.
In 2011, the marathon winners were Elijah Kiprono Kemboi of Kenya (2:11:15) and Maryna Damantsevich of Belorussia (2:33:53).
