The Maraton treh src, held annually in mid-May in the small spa town of Radenci, is one of Slovenia's most popular running events.

Over 3,800 runners took part in last year's event. The most popular distance was the half marathon, followed by the 10K and the 5.5K races.

The 42km marathon, however, had just 177 finishers. Running two laps around large fields on a broad flat plain is a mentally challenging task, and furthermore, it's usually very warm in the region in mid-May and there's hardly any shade on the course.

Therefore, finishing times have often been relatively slow. In 2011, the winners were Edwin Kibowen of Kenya (2:33:35) and, after serving a two-year doping ban, Helena Javornik of Slovenia (2:48:01).

Radenci is located in a low-lying agricultural region in the north-east of Slovenia, on the border with Austria. The spa resort with its thermal indoor and outdoor pools is next to the finish area and an enticing place to relax after the race.
