Held in the Carnia region in the north-eastern part of Italy, the Skyrace Carnia takes runners through the stunning scenery of the Carnic Alps which extend along the Italy-Austria border.

The start/finish area is at an elevation of 903 metres at the Laghetti di Timau (near the village of Paluzza) on the Passo di Monte Croce Carnico (German: Plöckenpass) mountain pass road which connects Italy and Austria.

(At the moment, the road is closed on the Italian side of the border because of a rock slide, so you can't get to the venue from Kötschach-Mauthen in Austria.)

Over the years, the race distance and the route have been changed several times.

In 2024, the event offers two highly-challenging trail races. Some of the trails are very technical.

  • 11.9 kilometres with 990 metres of ascent and 990 metres of descent
  • 23 kilometres with 1,800 metres of ascent and 1,800 metres of descent

Both routes visit the WWI trenches and fortifications on the peak of Pal Piccolo (1866m), which have been restored as an open-air museum (pictured above).

The highest point on the 23k course is at an elevation of 2,080 metres on Forcella Avostanis.
