Görlitz (Germany) - Zgorzelec (Poland), Sunday 3 June 2012
Held in the Europastadt Görlitz/Zgorzelec on the Germany-Poland border, the Europamarathon is a truly Central European marathon with an international character.
Since 1945, the city has been divided between two countries—Görlitz on the German side of the River Neisse and Zgorzelec on the Polish side. The half marathon takes place on the German side, but participants in the other races (5km, 10km and 42.2km) run from Germany to Poland and back to Germany!
The start and finish are in Görlitz's old town with its unique ensemble of late-Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque houses and approximately 4000 listed buildings.
The marathon is a certified, undulating loop course which takes runners through various parts of Görlitz and Zgorzelec as well as through rural areas and villages.
The event includes a number of races for wheelchair and handcycling athletes, inline skaters, kickbikers and walkers.
In 2011, over 900 runners took part in the Europamarathon races. The marathon winners were Torsten Hentschel (2:56:59) and Christin Marx (3:22:01).
