Over 1300 runners took part in the 2011 edition of the Maratonina Demmy, which features a beautiful half marathon route through the wine-growing region between the cities of Verona and Vicenza in northern Italy.

Starting and finishing in the village of Monteforte d'Alpone, the 21.1-kilometre course is a very scenic and hilly loop through vineyards and villages.

The first 4km and the last 7km are relatively flat but in the middle of the race the route climbs about 250 metres in elevation. There are stunning views from the course, and another highlight is running through the beautiful small town of Soave.

In 2011, the winners were Laalami Cherkaoui of Morocco (1:08:05) and Angéline Nyiransabimana of Rwanda (1:19:10).

The race forms part of the hugely popular Montefortiana, which has around 20,000 participants, most of them in the non-competitive walks which are up to 28km long.

The event also includes an elite road race (Montefortiana Turà) which is held after the half marathon, and - for the first time - a full marathon (EcoMaratona Clivus).
