Wörthersee Halbmarathon - 'Kärnten läuft' 2012
Velden - Klagenfurt (Austria), Sunday 19 August 2012
Every year in mid-August, "Kärnten läuft" ("Carinthia runs"), together with a large number of international athletes.
Last year, over 3000 runners completed the half marathon along the northern shore of the Wörthersee, and around 1400 took part in the 10.5km quarter marathon.
Start of the 21km race is on the lakeside promenade in Velden, a fashionable resort at the western end of the Wörthersee. The finish line is in the Europapark at the eastern end of the lake, situated approximately four kilometres from the city centre of Klagenfurt, capital of the State of Carinthia.
The course is mildly undulating and traffic-free. Unfortunately, a large part of the shore is in private hands, so that only a few sections of the route are along the lakefront.
In 2011, some of the world's best distance runners ran the Wörthersee Half Marathon.
Florence Kiplagat of Kenya set a new women's course record of 1:08:02, five weeks before she lifted the trophy of the Berlin Marathon, which she won in 2:19:44.
Wilson Kipsang, also of Kenya, celebrated victory in Klagenfurt in a time of 1:02:05. Two months later, he won the Frankfurt Marathon in 2:03:42!
