Cornuda (Italy), Wednesday 25 April 2012
Nature-loving runners with an interest in history will be particularly appealed by the Duerocche, a long-standing event for trail runners and walkers, held in the foothills of the Venetian Alps in northern Italy.
The event offers three running routes: 6km, 12km and 21km.
The start and the finish are in the small town of Cornuda in the Province of Treviso, about 60km north of Venice.
All routes are very hilly. Competitors run on trails through the Fagarè forest, which is interspersed with World War One trenches. They enjoy fine views from Monte Sulder, and they pass the Santuario della Madonna della Rocca, a sanctuary built on the ruins of a medieval fortress.
The 13km Passeggiata Storica ('History Walk') starts in the picturesque small town of Asolo and finishes in Cornuda. Walkers see due rocche ('two fortresses') — the Rocca di Asolo (pictured) and the sanctuary near Cornuda.
Last year, the half marathon winners were Lucio Fregona (1:30:39) and Maria Pia Chemello (1:50:24).
