Canazei (Italy), Saturday 10 September 2011
The Sellaronda Trail Running is a new, incredibly-scenic and highly-challenging multi-terrain running race around the Gruppo del Sella, an awe-inspiring massif in the Dolomites in Italy.
The route is 51 kilometres long. It includes almost 3,500 metres of climbing. Participants can compete as individuals or as part of a 2-person relay team.
Most of the race is run on dirt roads and mountain trails. Some sections are on asphalt roads.
Competitors will run across four mountain passes and through four winter sports resorts (Canazei, Selva, Corvara, and Arabba). This year, the start and the finish will be in Canazei, which is at an elevation of 1,440 metres.
Along the route there will be ten feed stations, but as the race will take place in a high alpine environment runners will have to carry some mandatory equipment with them (see the list below).
The time limit to complete the course is ten hours. It's allowed to use trekking poles.
The last climb to Passo Pordoi, as seen from the Sella Group.
