32. Tek na Šmarno goro 2011
Tacen (Slovenia), Saturday 1 October 2011
The sixth and final race of the World Mountain Running Grand Prix takes place on Šmarna gora, a densely wooded hill situated on the edge of Slovenia's capital city Ljubljana.
On paper, the route does not seem to be exceptionally difficult - 10km with approximately 700m of climbing and 350m of descent - but it's a highly challenging race for experienced mountain runners.
The 2km-long downhill section in the middle of the race is extremely tricky as the route runs partly over rocky terrain, which can be very slippery.
Šmarna gora is a hill with two peaks. Competitors run up to the top of Grmada (676m), then half way down the hill, and then to the monastery on the summit of Šmarna gora (669m). Weather permitting, there are fine views of the Ljubljana basin.
In 2010, the winners were Ahmet Arslan of Turkey (42:28) and Austria's Andrea Mayr (48:48).
