Vienna (Austria), Saturday 8 October 2011
Over 10,000 runners are expected to take part in this year's Vienna Night Run, a 5K charity race along Vienna's imperial Ringstrasse, which is lined with grand buildings.
Participants run one loop around the city centre. The course is very mildly undulating. Runners start in three groups, at 8.00pm, 8.05pm, and 8.10pm. Nordic walkers start at 8.15pm.
The start and finish are at the Hofburg (Court Palace). Competitors pass the Austrian Parliament, the Rathaus (Town Hall), the State Opera House, the University, museums, theatres, and churches.
Six euros of each entry fee go to the charity "Light for the World", which will use the money to carry out eye operations in Africa.
Last year, Kenyan blind runner Francis Karanja finished the course in 16min 14sec, which earned him fifth place overall. His brother James won the race in 14min 45sec. Lydia Windbichler was the first woman across the line (18min 27sec).
