The Tek Trojk in Slovenia's capital city Ljubljana is a unique event with a special atmosphere.

With more than 4000 participants it's also one of Slovenia's largest running events. It forms part of the annual celebrations that commemorate the liberation of Ljubljana at the end of World War Two.

Participants must form a team of three runners (male, female or mixed). Teams choose between two distances: 12.5km and 29km. School children run 3km.

All team members run the full distance. They must cross the finish line together. It's not allowed to finish the race if the team is not complete.

The start and finish are on the beautiful Prešeren Square in the heart of Ljubljana's historic centre.

The route runs through the old town, through residential areas, and across the densely wooded Golovec hill. Most of the race is on asphalt, but parts of the course are are on dirt roads.

Tek Trojk is mostly a fun event without a prize fund and without entry fees. Each runner just pays 3 euros for the timing chip. All participants get a T-shirt.

The most popular event of the day, however, is usually the "pohod", a traditional 35km walk around the city. Last year, over 21,000 walked along the "Path of Remembrance and Comradeship" (POT), which indicates where a barbed wire fence surrounded the city from 1942 to 1945.
