Bratislava (Slovakia), Sunday 27 March 2011
The route crosses two huge Danube bridges: Nový most (in the front) and Most Apollo (the third bridge).
The marathon in Slovakia's capital city Bratislava is a well-organized and quickly-growing event.
In 2010, more than 1000 runners finished the half marathon, and over 400 completed the two-lap marathon. Almost 200 teams took part in the half marathon relay for teams of four runners. The event also offers a 5k run and children's competitions, held one day before the main races.
In 2011, due to construction works at one of the Danube bridges, the races follow a new route. Start and finish are around 1.5 kilometres to the east of the old town at the brand-new Eurovea center, a riverside development with shopping malls, luxury apartments and office spaces.
Participants run through the very pretty old town, across two imposing Danube bridges, and around the vast Petržalka housing estate in the southern part of Bratislava, partly on cycleways.
Apart from the ramps leading up to the bridges the route is flat and fast, but some sections of the course are very open and wind-prone.
In 2010, the marathon winners were Kenya's Edwin Kibowen (2:27:38) and Lilian Koech (2:51:16). Hosei Tuei of Kenya (1:05:08) and Anikó Kálovics of Hungary (1:14:31) won the half marathon.
Remember that the night before the marathon the clocks jump one hour forward due to the start of 'European Summer Time', so don't be late!
