Forni di Sopra (Italy), Sunday 28 August 2011
More than 550 runners and hikers took part in last year's edition of this 20-kilometre trail race through the breathtaking scenery of the Friulian Dolomites in north-eastern Italy.
Participants have seven hours to complete the course but nevertheless they need to be well prepared as the route features 1700 metres of ascent and 1700 metres of descent.
The start and finish are in the ski and holiday resort of Forni di Sopra (880m). The route crosses three mountain ridges in the Parco Naturale delle Dolomiti Friulane, a widely unspoilt region with a varied flora and fauna. The highest point on the course is at 2175 metres above sea level.
Most of the route is on mountain trails, just about four kilometres are on paved roads. Many participants use hiking poles because parts of the course are very steep and on loose terrain.
In 2010, the winners were Tadei Pivk (1:53:05) and Lavinia Garibaldi (1:49:47).
