13th "3/4 Half Marathon" 2011
Bruneck/Brunico (Italy), Saturday 27 August 2011
Schloss Neuhaus is just one of the castles along the route.
Competition is fierce in the 3/4-Halbmarathon, a 17.6km road race in Südtirol ("South Tyrol"), Italy's northernmost alpine province where most people speak German as a first language.
Many top runners from the region and further afield have taken part in the event. Last year's winners were Hermann Achmüller (56:31) and Laura Ricci (1:08:17). The race had about 500 finishers.
Very roughly speaking, the route is three quarters of the half marathon distance long. Start is in the attractive small town of Bruneck (Italian: Brunico), the finish in the holiday and ski resort of Sand in Taufers (Campo Tures).
Competitors run on roads and cycleways along the Tauferer Tal ("Tauferer Valley"). A short section is on a trail. The route is undulating and overall mildly uphill. Snow-capped mountain peaks and several castles on the hillsides provide an impressive backdrop.
