22nd Mountain Marathon Kainach 2011
Kainach (Austria), Sunday 14 August 2011
After a one-year break, the 43-kilometre Bergmarathon in Austria is back on the calendar. Start and finish are in the village of Kainach, situated in the rolling hills to the west of Graz, Austria's second largest city.
Overall, the route features around 1800 metres of elevation gain and the same in elevation loss. The highest point on the course is at 1790 metres on the Gleinalpe mountain range.
Participants run one loop through forests and mountain pastures, partly on asphalt roads but mostly on dirt roads and trails. The best part is running along the grassy ridge of the Gleinalpe.
You can expect to add one hour to your normal road marathon finishing time. The time limit is seven hours. The event also offers a 3-person relay and a 20km nordic walking competition.
In 2009, the marathon winners were Harald Bauer (3:23:47) and Karoline Dohr (4:06:34).
