Cornuda (Italy), Easter Monday 25 April 2011
The "Rocca di Asolo"
Nature-loving runners with an interest in history will be particularly appealed by the Duerocche, a trail running event in the foothills of the Venetian Alps in northern Italy.
The start and finish are in the small town of Cornuda, which is around 60km from Venice.
The main race is the very hilly and challenging half marathon. Some sections are on asphalt, but most of the course is on trails.
Competitors run through the Fagarè forest, which is interspersed with World War One trenches, they enjoy fine views from Monte Sulder, and they pass the "Santuario della Madonna della Rocca", a sanctuary built on the ruins of a medieval fortress.
The event includes two shorter distances (7k and 12k), which are suitable for runners and walkers, as well as a 13k "History Walk" (Passeggiata Storica) from the picturesque small town of Asolo to Cornuda. Walkers see due rocche ("two fortresses") — the "Rocca di Asolo" and the sanctuary near Cornuda.
In 2010, the half marathon winners were Claudio Cassi (1:27:37) and Sara Tomè (1:54:38).
