The Hamburg Marathon is Germany's most popular spring marathon running event.

In 2025, approximately 11,700 marathon runners and 1,400 relay teams completed the 42.2km marathon course. The 21.1km half marathon had over 3,900 finishers.

The marathon is a loop course starting at 8:30am at the Hamburg Messe exhibition centre.

Half marathon runners start at 2pm near the Außenalster lake and run the second half of the marathon course.

Seen from the air, Hamburg seems to be as flat as a pancake, but the marathon route is not one of the flattest and fastest in our Race Guide. There are no significant climbs or hills to mention but the course profile is rarely completely flat.

However, the crowd support is very good and the route is scenic as it takes in many of Hamburg's best sights, such as the famous Reeperbahn red-light district, the gigantic port, the Binnenalster and Außenalster lakes and some exclusive residential areas.
