33rd Gorizia Half Marathon 2011
Gorizia (Italy), Sunday 6 March 2011
The Maratonina di Gorizia is a truly international event. Approximately 11 kilometres of the course run through Italy, and 10 kilometres through Slovenia.
The start and the finish are in the town centre of Gorizia on the Italian side of the border.
Participants run along Gorizia's main boulevard (Corso Italia), they pass the medieval Castello which stands on a hill overlooking the town, they see a number of elegant palazzi, and they run through the towns of Šempeter and Nova Gorica in Slovenia.
The course is mildly undulating and includes multiple twists and turns but it's regarded by most runners as fast. In addition to the half marathon, the event features a 9k fun run.
In 2010, the half marathon had almost 750 finishers. Geoffrey Gikuni of Kenya set a new course record of 1:02:13, Hungary's Ida Kovacs led the women home in 1:17:21.
