The Šmarna gora Race is the final race of the World Mountain Running Cup, a series of six prestigious races that attract the best mountain runners on the globe.

Last year, Fred Musobo of Uganda (42 minutes 45 seconds) and Sarah Tunstall of Great Britain (52 minutes 58 seconds) led a field of 114 runners from eleven countries across the finish line on the summit of Šmarna gora, a wooded hill on the edge of Slovenia's capital Ljubljana.

The route is 10km long and very challenging as it features 710m of ascent and 350m of descent, partly on steep and narrow forest trails which are strewn with slippery rocks and tree roots.

Šmarna gora is a hill with two peaks — Grmada (676m) and Šmarna gora (669m). Starting at the foot of the hill, competitors run uphill to the summit of Grmada, then halfway down the hill, and then up again to the finish line at the monastery on top of Šmarna gora.

Weather permitting, there are excellent views of the Alps and of the Ljubljana basin.
