Trieste (Italy), Sunday 8 May 2011
12th European Marathon
16th European Two Castles Half Marathon
18th Bavisela non-competitive run
The Maratona d'Europa features an interesting route along the Gulf of Trieste in north-eastern Italy.
The event consists of three point-to-point races - a marathon, a half marathon, and an immensely popular 7-kilometre fun run, the Bavisela, which had an estimated 12,000 participants last year.
All races finish in the port city of Trieste. The finish line is on Piazza dell'Unità d'Italia, Trieste's showpiece main square, located right on the seafront.
The start of the 42km-marathon is in the attractive old town of Gradisca d'Isonzo.
Competitors pass Italy's largest military cemetery of World War I in Redipuglia, the shipbuilding town of Monfalcone, the castle and the cliffs of Duino and the castle of Miramare.
Half marathon runners join the field at Duino, the 7k runners at Miramare. Most of the route is flat but there are some challenging hills at Duino.
In 2009, the marathon winners were Adem Zekerya of Ethiopia (2:24:05) and Croatia's Marija Vrajić (2:57:20). Stefano Zancan of Italy (1:10:31) and Wubet Tesma Yewubet of Ethiopia (1:15:55) were the top half marathon finishers.
